Yolun Bilimi: 14’ten 19’a

An Evidence-Informed Development Guide for Academy Footballers and Their Families

School in the morning, travel afterwards, then training… A young footballer’s development is not limited to minutes on the pitch. Sleep, adequate nutrition, school, growth, additional training and asking for help when needed are also part of the journey.

“Professionalism is not about training more every day, hiding pain or cutting back on sleep.”

Yolun Bilimi offers academy and development-league players aged 14–19, their families and coaches a shared, accessible language for understanding research. It does not prescribe training or treatment. It explains what research suggests, where uncertainty remains and which decisions should be made together with the club’s performance or healthcare team.

Who is this book for?

  • Young footballers: Planning school, travel and training; paying attention to sleep, meals, recovery and screen use; speaking openly about pain or unusual fatigue.
  • Parents and caregivers: Offering support without pressure; observing nutrition, sleep, school and health-related concerns; maintaining constructive communication with the club.
  • Academy coaches and performance staff: A referenced framework for considering growth, total workload, additional gym sessions, player wellbeing and the school calendar together.

Topics covered

  • Growth and biological maturation from ages 14 to 19, including different development rates among players of the same age
  • Total demands from team sessions, matches, school and private training; coordinating additional work outside the club
  • Age-appropriate strength and gym work, without prescribing how many extra sessions a player should complete
  • The importance of everyday nutrition, hydration, sleep and post-training recovery
  • The day from morning classes to evening training, including possible effects of screens, social media and late bedtimes
  • Balancing education and football; the distinct responsibilities of parents, coaches and healthcare staff
  • Recognising when to seek help for injury, a blow to the head, recurring pain or mental health concerns
  • Development principles drawn from academy approaches in England, Germany, Italy and Türkiye

Technical terms are explained, and stronger, context-dependent and limited evidence are distinguished. The book includes clickable links to 83 scientific and institutional sources. The core protective principles in its school, travel, screen-use and sleep section may also be useful to families of players aged 11–13 who begin academy football earlier.

The author’s field experience

Bülent Ece worked for three seasons in the İstanbul Başakşehir Football Club academy and three seasons in the Fenerbahçe Sports Club academy, for a total of six seasons in academy-league settings. These observations do not replace scientific evidence in the book; they help frame questions about a young footballer’s daily life.
